While Shinigami use Shikai, Quincy use Schrift in combat. It determines your abilities and further development of the build, so you will want to get a powerful one.
Regardless of the race you choose in Type Soul, all players start at the lowest rank. Sure, you spawn in a faction location, but your abilities are far from outstanding. For example, Quincy only has a sword and a bow for powerful attacks. This is enough to complete simple missions but is completely useless when fighting other players, especially high-ranking ones. The first step to fixing this is acquiring your Schrift in Type Soul.
