Battlefield fans don’t have to wait much longer for the next game in the franchise to release. After beta tests and numerous leaks, Battlefield 6 is gearing up for its October launch, and players have shown a great deal of interest in the game, with the Battlefield 6 beta passing half a million concurrent players.

Battlefield 6 Devs Talk Aim Assist 2.0

In a conversation with Well Played, Battlefield Studios Designer Matthew Nickerson and Technical Director Christian Buhl discussed the game, community feedback, and challenges faced. One aspect they touched on was aim assist, which is “inherited” from Battlefield 2042, but also considerably retooled. The developers are calling it “Aim Assist 2.0” and explained that aim assist in Battlefield 6 will be “very light,” with the emphasis on assisting the player, but not replacing player input. The team added that they want players to feel as though they achieved their shots, rather than “some system or code” doing it for them. This echoes what Battlefield global community manager Kevin Johnson previously said on the matter, indicating that “YOU are the skill,” and that Battlefield 6‘s aim assist is only designed to provide a fair standing against other peripheral users in “heated moments.”

Additionally, the tech behind aim assist has also been refined since Battlefield 2042. Instead of hitboxes, spheres, and squares, Battlefield 6 utilizes capsule-oriented meshes, which are more accurate to the actual physical body of the target being shot at. This should help to prevent shots that didn’t actually connect being registered as a hit. Further, snap zoom from Battlefield 2042 has been removed, and the team isn’t adding rotational aim assist to the game, either. On the other hand, aim assist has been added to vehicle combat in this entry, as the devs pointed out that without it, Battlefield 2042 players would sometimes switch from controller to keyboard and mouse just for those portions of the game.

While Battlefield 6‘s inclusion of quick turn concerned some players, the limited aim assist in the beta took some fans of games like Call of Duty by surprise. Whether Battlefield 6‘s aim assist levels the playing field as intended so players from consoles and PC can play together with different control schemes fairly will become clearer once the game officially launches.
