Some Battlefield 6 fans believe publisher EA has quietly changed the game’s Phantom Edition skins just weeks before the title is due to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. There has been plenty of discussion surrounding cosmetic items in shooters such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6 in recent weeks, but now some fans are even refunding their pre-orders over speculation that a handful of skins have been slightly adjusted.
After years of unrealistic cosmetic items in Call of Duty, Black Ops 6 was the tipping point for the shooter’s community. With the reveal of Black Ops 7, fans made it clear that they were unhappy with the series’ direction, prompting publisher Activision and developer Treyarch to make significant changes. The two studios quickly admitted that the series had strayed from its core identity and that it would be canceling Call of Duty‘s controversial Carry Forward feature. However, these concerns have now seeped into Battlefield 6, as fans are trying to ensure that EA does not end up walking down the same path as Activision.
Fans have already expressed concerns over a leaked Battlefield 6 skin, with many urging others to “push back” against any sort of unrealistic cosmetic item. It’s possible that the backlash has already made its way back to EA, as Twitter user Battlefield Intel (spotted by Insider Gaming) is speculating that the publisher has quietly changed the game’s Phantom Edition skins. Not everyone is convinced, as the adjustments appear to be incredibly minimal, but the user has provided a before-and-after screenshot, which can be seen below.
While it could simply be due to lighting differences, EA may have toned down the redness of Battlefield 6‘s Phantom Edition skins. What is undeniable is that the soldier wearing the night vision goggles now has them placed on his head, and they appear to be much smaller in size. EA has yet to confirm whether or not it has changed the Phantom Edition skins in any way, but there does appear to be outrage at the potential adjustments. One Twitter user has even refunded their Battlefield 6 Phantom Edition in protest, stating that the skins are not what was originally advertised at the time of purchase.
Last week, a Battlefield 6 developer commented on the unrealistic skin controversy in other first-person shooters, such as Call of Duty. The developer attempted to reassure fans that it would not be going down the same path as other titles, as Battlefield 6 will be a “gritty, realistic shooter.” Senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson also noted that the studio isn’t “chasing trends” and used the recent ‘Road to Battlefield 6‘ Battle Pass in Battlefield 2042 as an example of the grounded skins players can expect from the upcoming shooter.
