Among the colorful characters of One Piece, Tony Tony Chopper is a particularly interesting and enjoyable character with considerable potential. Not only has he transcended the boundaries between species as a reindeer, but he’s also one of the most accomplished doctors in the anime despite being the youngest member of the Straw Hats. He’s incredibly talented, and he’s not afraid to fight if he needs to.

Compared to other members of the crew, Chopper may not have as many spectacular feats under his belt, but all of his accomplishments prove how much he’s grown and matured throughout his journey. Due to his overall innocence and naivety, these changes feel much more tangible when it comes to his progression as a character.

Defeating Chessmarimo

Chopper’s First Stand

During his debut on Drum Island, Chopper initially appeared as a shy reindeer who was passionate about helping people. He had a great fear of strangers and actively avoided meeting people, but that changed when his home was in danger. When Wapol returned to reclaim his castle, Chopper was one of the first people to fight back.

While he doesn’t defeat Wapol himself, Chopper shows great bravery and passion in his battle against Chessmarimo, a fusion of Wapol’s subordinates. This is the point in the series where Zoan Devil Fruits are roughly explained, and Chopper displays his abilities as a doctor and a Devil Fruit user, introducing the Rumble Ball. In the end, he wins his fight in under three minutes.

Fighting Baroque Works

Taking Out A Dynamic Duo

In the Alabasta Arc, the members of Baroque Works acted as the main antagonists, with Crocodile being at the head of it all. The Straw Hats often faced off against different pairs of agents who had incredibly unique powers and fighting styles. During the main conflict in Alubarna, Chopper and Usopp fought Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas.

During this fight, Chopper displayed great ingenuity and resilience against the pair of explosive baseball players. Not only did he battle them on his own for a short time, but he also disrupted their underground combat strategy, and eventually, he and Usopp were able to win. By this point, Chopper had been part of the crew for a short time, so this was a particularly big milestone.

Defending The Sunny

Fighting A Losing Battle

After the failed wedding on Whole Cake Island, Big Mom went on a rampage looking for the wedding cake, and to catch the Straw Hats, Perospero and Katakuri took control of the Thousand Sunny. As the only crew members available to defend their ship, Brook and Chopper wasted no time leaping into battle.

Despite their combined combat ability and Brook’s ability to manipulate souls, the two were clearly outmatched. Perospero’s Candy-Candy fruit basically countered their fighting styles, and Katakuri was an opponent that even Luffy had a hard time defeating. Although they lose this fight, this is one of the few moments Chopper gets to show off his abilities and his loyalty to the crew.

Victory On Skypeia

A Pirate’s First Win

Since joining the crew, Chopper has dutifully fulfilled his role as the crew’s doctor, healing the sick and patching up the wounded, and although he’s been in his fair share of fights, he’s always had help from someone else. It wasn’t until the crew reached Skypeia that Chopper achieved his first solo victory.

During one of Enel’s trials, Chopper faced off against Gedatsu, a priest who used cloud dials to suffocate his enemies and enhance his punches. At first, Chopper could only focus on evading attacks, but after learning all of Gedatsu’s tricks, he was able to overcome this challenge with some quick thinking and crafty sleight of hand. It was his first official victory as a pirate.

Despite only having a minor role in Wano, the country of samurai would end up presenting some of Chopper’s greatest challenges. That is due to one of Kaidou’s commanders, Queen, who actively used biological warfare without restrictions. In the Udon prison, many of Queen’s subordinates resorted to using plague ammunition to stop the prisoners.

The Beast Pirates infected many prisoners with Mummy, a virus that caused victims to dry up and experience constant pain. When they searched for relief, they would infect those around them. Luckily, Chopper’s medical knowledge allowed him to examine the virus and create antibodies for everyone, saving Luffy and the other samurai in just a few hours.

Creating The Antidote

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the Straw Hats needed to split up, with half staying in Dressrosa and the others continuing to Zou. Brook, Chopper, Nami, and Sanji, along with Momonosuke and Caesar, agreed to wait for Luffy’s team on the jungle island, but upon their arrival, they realized something was wrong.

Unfortunately, the Beast Pirates had raided Zou looking for Raizo, and in their haste, they destroyed the Mink village and put everyone in a state of near-death using Koro, a poisonous gas made by Caesar. Chopper is able to save the Mink tribe using his medical knowledge and Caesar’s help, curing the poison in the hours before it would kill everyone.

Fighting Kumadori

Monster Point Activate

One of Chopper’s most epic moments is when Monster Point is first introduced. Until then, Chopper had only said that there was a limit to the number of Rumble Balls he could take, but he never explained what would happen if he exceeded that limit. Monster Point made Chopper a hidden powerhouse for the crew, even if it was uncontrollable.

In general, Chopper’s fight with Kumadori was already quite amazing. Not only was he able to save Nami, but he also showed his resilience and dedication to the people he cared for. In this case, it was Robin. Monster Point shed new light on his character, presenting the potential he could grow into as the series progressed.

Curing The Ice Oni Virus

Chopper’s last big challenge in Wano occurred during the raid on Onigashima. Queen used his plague ammunition to spread the Ice Oni virus onto the party floor, causing friend and foe alike to transform into demonlike beings with enhanced strength. This disease was incredibly deadly and capable of spreading with the slightest touch.

In the short time it was exposed, Chopper was able to analyze the symptoms of the virus and identify how it spread, discovering that fire could slow the disease’s progression. Despite being infected himself, Chopper was able to create a counter-virus to save everyone’s life, earning him the admiration of all the afflicted people, even enemies. Further innovation allowed him to cure thousands of people at once.
