Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is making a comeback on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in 2026, this time with a new version called Danganronpa 2×2. Featuring the classic whodunnit Class Trial appeal and killing game mechanics of the original 2012 release of the Danganronpa game, this version has plenty more in store for returning fans, including an entirely new alternate story.
Games in the Danganronpa series follow groups of Elites, teenagers with superior specialized skills, who are pitted against each other in a Killing Game to escape captivity. Characters can escape by killing one another, but they have to get away with the crime via a Class Trial or face an elaborate execution carried out by a sadistic teddy bear-like being named Monokuma.
A New Danganronpa Story is Coming to Switch and Switch 2 in 2026
The release of Danganronpa 2 traded in the dreary Hope’s Peak Academy setting for a tropical island, providing a stark juxtaposition of summertime fun and the looming threat of grisly murder. The reveal of a new trailer during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct live stream confirms that players will be returning to Jabberwork Island sometime next year to participate in its Killing Game. However, an original story has been included in addition to the main game. In this alternate take the victims and killers will be switched up, providing players with a completely alternate take and a new set of Class Trials to undergo in the hopes of identifying the murderers.
