This article contains some spoilers from Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer is at the center of a lot of attention right now, especially with the recent release of its newest movie, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 – Akaza’s Return. A lot of battles are featured in this movie, which was expected, given that it covers the final showdown of the story. Here, fans get to see all the characters using their breathing forms to their full potential. The creator of Demon Slayer has, however, revealed something quite shocking about this power.

Demon Slayer’s Main Power System is Breathing Forms and Blood Demon Art

Demon Slayer is one of the biggest shonen series ever. Its popularity has exceeded all expectations, especially since it received an anime adaptation. As is the case with most Battle Shonen, power systems and fighting styles are a huge focus in the Demon Slayer series. Needless to say, Demon Slayer handles it extremely well.

Demon Slayer also has characters with their own unique fighting styles and a defined power system. Demon Slayers in the series use Nichirin Swords, and with these swords, they can learn Breathing Forms. There are multiple Breathing Forms, but they all originate from Sun Breathing — something created by the strongest character, Yoriichi. Meanwhile, Demons mostly rely on Blood Demon Art. These abilities are diverse and vary depending on the Demon. They came to be thanks to Muzan’s blood. Demons can also use Breathing Forms, however, as seen with Kokushibo and his Moon Breathing.

Demon Slayer Creator Reveals Breathing Forms Are Not Literal

Breathing Forms Don’t Actually Unleash Elemental Attacks

Breathing forms are very eye-catching, and fans have watched characters use them throughout the series. Some characters use Water Breathing, and when that happens, fans can see water flow out of their swords. Others, such as Rengoku, use Fire Breathing, where he seems to be able to create and control fire with his sword. However, to many fans’ shock, the creator of Demon Slayer, Koyoharu Gotouge, has revealed that these characters can’t actually use real fire or real water. They reveal that these Breathing Forms make people think they see elements.

Here’s her full statement in volume 17:

“Murata-san’s blood relatives were killed by demons, so he joined the demon hunters because he had no living relatives.

He uses the Breath of Water, but the water is so faint that you don’t see it.

Note: Swordsmen don’t actually unleash water attacks. People who see this just think they see and feel it.” — Koyoharu Gotouge in Volume 17 of Demon Slayer

This comment by the author has definitely been controversial, especially as one of the things that has made Demon Slayer as popular as it is is its visually catching breathing style attacks. It’s important to note that this does not seem to apply to Demons, however, as Kokushibo and Kaigaku do seem to be using “real” moon and thunder breathing attacks.

The Demon Slayer manga concluded long ago, in 2020 to be specific. The story is rather short compared to most other series, and only spans over 205 chapters. Fans of the series who don’t want to wait for the movies to drop can check the manga out on Manga Plus. Meanwhile, for the anime, the series currently has 4 anime seasons. These anime seasons can all be found on Crunchyroll. The rest of the series will be animated into movies, for which fans will have to wait for a theatrical release. The release date, in this case, depends on their country.
