Dragon Ball Fans Lose Faith After Toyotarou’s Latest Panel Appearance
Description
Summary
- Toyotarou did not confirm the return of Dragon Ball Super at the Japan Expo.
- Fans were left disappointed with vague updates and no concrete information.
- The manga’s return is uncertain, leaving loose story threads and speculation about possible arcs.
The return of both the Dragon Ball Super series, both in its manga and anime forms, has been at the top of the most anticipated returns in the entire industry, and speculation regarding this had never been higher prior to the Japan Expo in Paris. This is because Toyotarou was confirmed to be attending on one of the days of the event, where he would talk about the future of the franchise and its current state.
Because of this, Dragon Ball fans were completely convinced that he would finally reveal all the details regarding the return of the anime and the manga, the former of which had been on hiatus since 2017 and the latter of which went on a hiatus following the sudden passing of Akira Toriyama in early 2024. However, many were left utterly disappointed in the updates they actually received, so let’s take a look at why this is.

Toyotarou Didn’t Confirm Anything Regarding The Series’ Return
Only Vague Statements
- Many fans were finally expecting details about Super’s return.
- However, nothing concrete was stated.
Dragon Ball Super’s return has long been the topic of much debate and discussion, not only among those within the fandom, but also for the anime/manga industry in general. However, the build-up to the Japan Expo in Paris, held on the 6th of July 2025, was perhaps the most hyped of them all, since Toyotarou was confirmed to be at the panel to discuss Super and the future of the franchise.
Although some cool details were revealed here, such as the writer’s own thoughts on the property as a whole, ultimately, many were left gravely disappointed in the entire event since there was nothing revealed about the franchise’s return. Fans believed that even an outright denial of Super’s would have been better than the vague statements alluding to a potential comeback, since, that way, there would be finality to the whole thing without the fans needlessly getting their hopes up.
Toyotaro said that it’s not impossible to continue without Toriyama-sensei, because it was he (Toyotaro) who wrote the story of Dragon Ball Super and then sent it to Toriyama, who would approve or not.

Toyotarou revealed that the story is very difficult to continue without the input and guidance of the legendary Akira Toriyama, but it isn’t like it can’t continue at all. He even said that a return is possible, but the vague nature of the comments has greatly disappointed fans and has left them disgruntled and unsure. Of course, there are other properties within Dragon Ball worth spending time with, such as Daima, but Super is a fan-favorite series that has been anticipated to return for years now.
The story was left incomplete and in a strange place, clearly unfinished due to the many loose threads that were left untied. Chief among these is Black Frieza, who came back at the end of the Granolah arc in a form that made him even stronger than Goku and Vegeta’s strongest forms, alluding to the fact that the franchise’s greatest villain may end up being its final one.
Another was the reveal of the main Z-Fighters going forward, all of whom have unlocked incredible new transformations that have made them relative in terms of power. Leaving these things as they are would be incredibly detrimental, not only to the story of the series itself, but perhaps even to Toriyama’s legacy. This is quite a tricky place that Toyotarou is in, since most fans believe that he has definitely proven himself as a worthy successor to Toriyama, so he should continue the series from where it left off.
However, at the current moment, there is little hope for the series returning anytime soon. However, in Toyotarou’s own words, all hope is not lost since he thinks it’s possible to continue Dragon Ball. The unfortunate truth here is the fact that, despite this, his comments seem to indicate that he hasn’t started any story regarding the future of Dragon Ball, so even if it does return, fans will likely have to wait a long time for it.

Where Could The Story Go If The Manga Returns?
Endless Possibilities
There are many different story arcs that the story can visit once it returns. Most notable and hyped of these is the Black Frieza arc, where the heroes will finally face the strongest foe that currently exists within the multiverse, who has proven to be so powerful that Goku and Vegeta’s strongest forms were nothing to him. However, this is also the perfect candidate for the final arc of Super.
So, the multiverse itself was an incredible concept added to the series that unfortunately wasn’t expanded upon too much. Because of this, most fans would love to see where the story could go in regard to it, with fans explicitly naming the Universe 6 and Universe 11 arcs that would be great to see. However, all they can do right now is wait with bated breaths and pray for the series’ return.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
