Description

Borderlands 4 may still be weeks away from launch, but that hasn’t stopped fans from building their perfect Vault Hunter using some of the game’s leaked and officially revealed skill trees. With the skill trees for Borderlands 4‘s Vex and Rafa now fully revealed, there is plenty of room for players to begin dissecting each character’s strengths and weaknesses in search of the best early combinations. Meanwhile, a full leak of Amon’s skill tree has fueled theorycrafting across Reddit and YouTube, although Gearbox has yet to confirm whether the leak is true. Nevertheless, with Vex and Rafa representing half of Borderlands 4‘s Vault Hunter lineup, players can more adequately prepare their playstyles before the game even launches.

The only outlier right now is Harlowe, who is now the most intriguing Vault Hunter of the entire bunch, not just because her marketing has been shallow, but also because her skill tree has neither been leaked nor revealed. Her Action Skills and Trait have been shared, but that’s about as far as any details on her character’s gameplay go. It could be that Gearbox is planning a big reveal for her soon, but it could also be that the plan is to save her for the game. Either way, it makes her skill tree look even more like it could bring some unexpected gameplay twists that the others don’t in Borderlands 4.

Three Skill Trees Have Been Revealed or Leaked, but One Remains Untouched

The main Vault Hunters of Borderlands 4.

Vex Is All About Survivability, Crowd Control, and Elemental Manipulation

Borderlands 4‘s Vex revolves around elemental combat and companion-based crowd control, making her a preferred pick for solo players who want a decent combination of flexibility and survivability. Vex’s always-on passive Trait is Phase Covenant, which aligns the Elemental Type of her Action Skill and melee damage to the gun she’s currently armed with. As for her Action Skills, which top each of her three skill trees, players can choose from Dead Ringer, Incarnate, and Phase Phamiliar, each of which has over 30 skills to unlock.

  • Dead Ringer: Vex spawns a posse of Phase Clone Minions that continually lose health from the moment they spawn, but they can be great for crowd control.
  • Incarnate: Unleashes Phase Explosions upon activation, an area-of-effect skill that deals damage to enemies and simultaneously heals Vex. She then enters a temporary powered-up state that increases her movement speed and grants her the ability to fire powerful Eldritch Blasts.
  • Phase Phamiliar: Vex commands Trouble to teleport to and deal damage in an area before transforming into a Badass.

Rafa Is About as Aggressive as They Come

Whereas Vex is more about crowd control and survivability, Rafa’s skill trees in Borderlands 4 prioritize raw damage output. One of his most notable Action Skills is his Peacebreaker Cannons, which summons auto turrets to keep the rank-and-file at bay while players focus on single, larger targets. However, his Overdrive Trait is perhaps his best feature, as it increases his movement speed and damage whenever an Action Skill is active, effectively killing two birds with one stone by encouraging players to use their Action Skill while simultaneously making Rafa more powerful.

  • Arc-Knives: Shifts perspective from first-person to third-person, allowing players to use Rafa’s Arc-Knives with maximum precision and spatial awareness. Rafa’s Blade Fury ability can then be used to end the Action Skill and unleash a powerful Shock Damage-infused whirlwind attack.
  • Peacebreaker Cannons: Rafa summons an extra gun over each shoulder that automatically seeks and destroys targets in front of him. The Peacebreaker Cannons can be modified to fire different ammo with Rafa’s passive skills, and players can even transform them into a stationary turret if they wish.
  • APOPHIS Lance: Rafa’s arm is converted into a cannon that fires piercing plasma orbs at enemies. APOPHIS Lance also includes multiple charges with each activation.

Amon’s Tree May Be Leaked, but Harlowe’s Still a Black Box

While Amon’s skill trees have only been leaked, what they do seem to show is a well-rounded Vault Hunter in Borderlands 4 that can function well in melee, ranged, and defensive combat. Each skill tree — currently known as “Disaster,” “Revenge,” and “Neuromechanical,” barring these names haven’t been lost in translation — appears to revolve around damage type, both playstyle and elemental. Disaster seems more focused on melee combat and fire damage, whereas Revenge appears to center around shield-oriented combat and frost damage. Neuromechanical, on the other hand, equips Amon with a forged axe that can be thrown and picked up to be used once more.

This leaves Harlowe, who may still be officially revealed as the time for Borderlands 4‘s release draws nearer. It seems like Gearbox is slowly unveiling how each of the game’s Vault Hunters works, so players may even be treated to an official overview of Amon as well very soon.
