After Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 took a modern turn, Final Fantasy 9 brought the franchise back to its medieval fantasy roots with its whimsical ensemble cast and colorful environments. Since the 2021 GeForce Now leaks listed a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9, speculation and rumors have sparked discussions among Final Fantasy fans. The Final Fantasy 9 remake rumors gained momentum in the lead-up to the game’s 25th anniversary, with Square Enix sharing new character art by original designer Toshiyuki Itahana.

Following a new trailer made for Final Fantasy 9‘s 25th anniversary and the announcement of new merchandise on the Square Enix store, users on the Final Fantasy subreddit pondered if that was all that the company would do to commemorate the occasion. In response, a Reddit user shared a post from the UK branch of Domino’s Pizza on Facebook, which stated that Square Enix should “announce the remake already” in reference to FF9‘s anniversary. So far, Square Enix has not revealed any information about Final Fantasy 9‘s potential remake.
However, one of the items that fans can pre-order is a Final Fantasy 9 artbook that delves into the origins of Vivi, one of the game’s main characters. According to previews posted on the Square Enix Store, Vivi got his name from his adopted grandfather, Quan, as the Roman numerals VI VI indicated that Vivi stood at 6’6″ while standing on his tiptoes and with his Black Mage’s hat fully straightened out. Pre-orders for the Final Fantasy 9 Picture Book are priced at $18, with a tentative release date of May 19, 2026.
At publication time, the day is only halfway through in Japan, so Final Fantasy 9 fans waiting for further word about a potential remake should not lose hope yet. Only time will tell if Square Enix has any surprises left in store for Final Fantasy 9‘s 25th anniversary.
