Forget Garp, Monkey D. Dragon Was The True Hero Of God Valley

For years, One Piece readers were led to believe that Garp was the only hero of the God Valley Incident. The Vice Admiral was said to have taken down Rocks D. Xebec, saving the Celestial Dragons from his wrath. It has since been confirmed that Garp was not the hero that the World Government made him out to be.

There were several other people in God Valley who made invaluable contributions. In the recent One Piece chapters, Monkey D. Dragon emerged as a candidate who was responsible for saving countless lives on the island.

Dragon Saved Kuma, Shanks, And Shamrock

The God Valley Incident occurred 38 years prior to the current timeline, and at the time, Monkey D. Dragon was just an ordinary Marine. He wasn’t a high-ranking official, nor did he seem to have any fancy powers. Dragon was holding a gun and trying to obey orders. His superior told him to shoot the civilians, which confused the young soldier. Dragon’s morality made him question the order of firing at unarmed people.

As Dragon looked around the island, he found a Celestial Dragon taking aim at Kuma. The Celestial Dragon wanted to kill Kuma, as he was worth 10,000 points. Thankfully, Dragon was at the scene, and he took out the Celestial Dragon. This was an extremely important moment because Kuma went on to save hundreds of people with his newfound Devil Fruit power. If he had been killed, there would have been many more casualties. Additionally, Kuma’s death would have changed the future of One Piece. Without Kuma, Ivankov and Ginny would have likely died on God Valley. Also, Bonney would never have been born, as Ginny wouldn’t have made it that far.

Furthermore, the Straw Hat Pirates would have been exterminated by Admiral Kizaru in Sabaody Archipelago. Dragon’s contribution didn’t stop there. He also met Shanks and Shamrock’s mother on God Valley. She begged him to rescue her sons from the clutches of Figarland Garling. Dragon knew the risks involved in the mission, yet he still found the twins and saved them.

Fans already know Shanks ended up inside a treasure box that was taken away by the Roger Pirates. It’s likely that Dragon put him there. What’s interesting is how Shamrock ended up with Garling. Since Dragon had both the kids, he must have kept them in the same place. So either Garling just took one of them on purpose or Dragon hid them in different places. It would be remiss not to mention that if Dragon had not saved Shanks, Luffy would have died at the hands of Higuma.

Dragon Wants To Free The World

Dragon was heavily involved in the God Valley Incident. He certainly played a crucial role, but more importantly, he saw the true face of the World Government. Dragon witnessed how the Celestial Dragons treated civilians as nothing more than insects. He also realized that the Marines were complicit. The organization primarily existed to protect the Celestial Dragons so they could do what they wanted without any repercussions.

After witnessing such horrors, Dragon knew that he had to do something. It’s likely that he left the Marines sometime after the God Valley Incident and formed the Freedom Fighters. He wanted to make the world a better place, but the World Government labeled him a traitor. Following the Ohara Incident, Dragon realized that peaceful means weren’t enough to topple the heinous World Government, which is why he formed the Revolutionary Army.

Dragon was joined by the likes of Ivankov, Bartholomew Kuma, and Ginny, all of whom shared a similar vision. Dragon and the Revolutionary Army soon became a nuisance to the World Government. The organization considered Dragon’s actions an act of open rebellion, which is why he was branded as the Worst Criminal in the World. Dragon has come a long way since then, and he still continues to save lives. Hopefully, Oda will shed more light on the life of the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army.
