Description

Many gamers consider getting flamed while playing online titles to essentially being a fact of life, and it seems that even Valve co-founder Gabe Newell isn’t immune to the experience. The president of Valve recently brought up some of the trash-talking he’s faced while playing one of Valve’s own games.

Gabe Newell is something of a legend among Steam users and Valve game fans. He’s not only known for a surprising level of communication with fans, but also has so many memes surrounding him that even Valve has gotten in on the fun with Gabe Newell memes on occasion. It seems that his down-to-earth attitudes extend to his play in online competitive games, including those by Valve.

Gabe Newell Faces Trash-Talking in Valve Games

Dota 2 kicked off its annual tournament The International on September 11, 2025, and as part of the opening ceremonies, Gabe provided a brief video talking about the game, its community, and the tournament. Gabe talked about loving the game and its community, but also dryly brought up getting trash-talked in the game, with other players reportedly telling him to do things like uninstall the game, that he’s a noob, and to die. As is typical of his general attitude, though, he didn’t seem to be bothered by the comments at all, noting that the trash-talking is “really about their enthusiasm for the game.” He added that he plays Dota 2 every single day due to the community.

This attitude may not surprise some fans, as Gabe Newell has shown he has a good sense of humor in the past and isn’t afraid of being the butt of a joke, and it seems that appears to include getting flamed in video games. Even so, the game community seems to be amused by the fact that he faces this kind of vitriol from some players when he heads the company responsible for the game they’re playing. Newell definitely has an interesting take on being trash-talked, finding the positives in it instead of getting his feelings hurt when his skill in a game is judged by others.

While Dota 2 is apparently part of Gabe Newell’s daily routine, he previously detailed the rest of his daily life with a YouTuber. Newell says he works seven days a week, and when he isn’t working on Steam, AI, or science projects, he works out and goes scuba diving. He described his work as being fun and what he gets to do every day as being “super awesome,” and it seems his love for the games Valve has produced, or at least Dota 2, hasn’t waned.
