Assessing it purely based on how beloved and richly textured the narrative is in Rockstar’s most recent game, Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto 6 has quite enormous shoes to fill and is likely expected to have a similarly impactful story. However, not much at all is known about Vice City’s Bonnie and Clyde-esque dual protagonists beyond a logline that gives hardly anything away about what direction Grand Theft Auto 6 is headed or what the “criminal conspiracy” is that they’re apparently coming into conflict with.

Of course, Grand Theft Auto 6’s story could take somewhat of a backseat to the overall atmosphere and player freedom that the franchise is popularly known for. In this case, a simple, straightforward narrative would probably be perfectly serviceable to a lot of players. That said, there’s already been one theoretical plot twist potentially unearthed that’s not too difficult to see foreshadowed in pre-release marketing thus far, and whether it’s true or not could have a big impact on the sixth mainline installment in the GTA franchise.
Grand Theft Auto 6’s Secrecy is a Blessing and a Curse
There are advantages and disadvantages to Grand Theft Auto 6 playing its hand early for the sake of establishing exposition. If a future Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer reveals more about Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos’ relationship, for example, there’s a chance that fans’ expectations or theories will be dispelled, for better or worse.
Moreover, any further details about Jason and Lucia are likely to be held close to Rockstar’s chest in order not to spoil anything about what their dynamic may truly be throughout the course of the game. Grand Theft Auto 6’s gameplay hasn’t even been revealed officially, either, besides in-game or in-engine cutscenes and transitional sequences, so it’s anyone’s guess how the bulk of the campaign could take shape.
This would all make perfect sense, too, if Grand Theft Auto 6’s campaign quickly reveals that Jason is an undercover cop who’s involving himself in Lucia’s life with an ulterior agenda. If that’s not so, however, and players are still left in the dark come May 26, 2026, Grand Theft Auto 6 will hopefully have another terrific plot twist or reason why it’s withholding so much information.
Ultimately, fans should take any rumors, leaks, or speculation with as many grains of salt as possible so that their preconceived notions of what Grand Theft Auto 6 may look like do not create a false depiction of the game or its story, where the reality of the situation could be more disappointing than what they had envisioned.
Grand Theft Auto 6’s Story Satisfying Its Hype is a Tall Order
The tiny scrap of backstory, legitimate or not (meaning whether it’s a red herring or a blatant lie to preserve actual story details), that Rockstar has provided for Grand Theft Auto 6’s Jason so far is that he had “a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens” and is now “working for local drug runners” in the Keys. The Army bit would be a clever way to immersively rationalize why Jason might have extensive firearms expertise, but it could also be yet another clue among foundations that point toward Jason being a police officer or aligning elsewhere on the law enforcement spectrum.
It’s fully possible that Jason isn’t a police officer and that Rockstar has no clandestine identity hidden away from players, but Jason merely being a drug runner with nothing more intriguing or endearing about his backstory could actually be a disservice to his character. If fans have succumbed to believing wholeheartedly that he’s a cop, only to learn when Grand Theft Auto 6 launches that he isn’t, it’ll either be an opportunity for a twist they didn’t see coming or a safer outcome.
