My Hero Academia: Horikoshi Reveals The Future Of Shoto Todoroki After The End Of The Manga

Horikoshi has revealed major information about MHA characters, including Shoto Todoroki.

If that wasn’t enough, then fans need to keep in mind that Horikoshi also did an art exhibition recently, where a ton of his incredible art of various Pro Heroes after the end of MHA was made public. My Hero Academia fans also heard from Kohei Horikoshi about various big changes that he made to the story, and one of them pertains to the ending of the series, which Horikoshi himself admits that he changed quite a bit.

How Horikoshi Changed The Ending Of My Hero Academia

  • Horikoshi Wanted To Make Deku Quirkless
  • Deku Was Supposed To Be A Teacher For Life

My Hero Academia fans will be shocked to know that Horikoshi ended up changing the main ending for his main character, Izuku Midoriya. It seems that right from the get-go, Horikoshi was set on giving him an ending where he didn’t retain his Quirk, the One For All. This might come as a shock to some, but according to Horikoshi, this was always the plan.

This is the story of how we all become the greatest Heroes. — Izuku Midoriya

The One For All did end up parting ways with Izuku Midoriya, and when that happened, he remained a teacher at UA, as seen in MHA chapter 430. However, 8 years after the war, Deku ended up receiving a Hero Armor, and this helped him become a Hero once again. Based on what Horikoshi said, this was a last-minute addition. His original ending for Deku had him as a teacher in UA for years upon years. Here’s what Horikoshi had to say:

Question: Chapter 1 ended with “This is the story of how I became the greatest hero”, and in chapter 324 that changed to “This is the story of how we all became the greatest heroes”. Then in chapter 430, the story ends with “This is the story of how we all continue to reach a hand out to others together”. Was this the plan from the beginning of the series?

Horikoshi’s answer: No! It wasn’t! I originally planned for it to end with Deku becoming a teacher and saying “You can be a hero!”. Having used up his powers but looking fully confident… like that. The reason it changed is that this series was no longer a story just about Deku and One For All. In this series I was exploring “What does it mean to be the greatest hero?” and the answer this manga came to is that it means “reaching a hand out to others”, so I thought I would put the answer in writing and that’s how the final monologue of chapter 430 became what it is now.

Changing Decision Shows A Lack Of Belief To Follow Through

Fans Aren’t Entirely Happy About The Change

When it comes to writing manga, or any other story, for that matter, there is no winning. Pleasing all fans is practically impossible and while some would’ve loved Deku being Quirkless and remaining a teacher for the rest of his life, others would’ve hated it. Similarly, many fans love the idea of Deku being a Hero again with his armor, and some surely hate it.

Horikoshi is working on a new manga after MHA. He has revealed new information about this work.

One thing is for sure, however, and that is Horikoshi wasn’t entirely sure about his own ending for Deku, which is why he made a big change at the end. This shows a lack of belief in the ending, and while that may be true, it matters little, because many fans loved it.

Where To Read And Watch My Hero Academia

The My Hero Academia manga was wrapped up by the mangaka, Horikoshi, in 2024. The story features 430 chapters for fans to read. All these chapters can be found on Manga Plus, as the story used to be serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump when it was still ongoing.
