Even if you don’t know the name “James Cameron,” you know James Cameron’s work. Despite only having directed nine released feature films since 1982, the man’s name is synonymous with Hollywood blockbusters. After all, his filmography is filled with some of the biggest movies ever released: Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Titanic, and Avatar among them. His latest film, 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, brought in over $2.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the filmmaking industry forever. Later this year, Avatar: Fire and Ash is sure to be the latest in a long line of successful flicks the Canadian director has brought to life since breaking through with 1984’s The Terminator. Simply put, there is no overstating how big of a deal James Cameron is. Which makes the news about his latest project all the more interesting and unexpected.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be the first project in the series not expected to bring groundbreaking new visuals, but it’s got something arguably better.

During her concert yesterday in Manchester, England, pop sensation Billie Eilish let it slip that she was working on a project shot in 3D with James Cameron. If you thought this could be little more than the wild ramblings of a pop star, Cameron himself was reportedly in the audience at the concert, seemingly validating Eilish’s words. “So you may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual in here,” Eilish said. “Basically, I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is that I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron, and it’s going to be in 3D. So, take that as you will, and these four shows here in Manchester, you and me are part of a thing that I am making with him. He’s in this audience somewhere, just saying. So don’t mind that, and also I’ll probably be wearing this exact outfit for like four days in a row.”

James Cameron Is Seemingly Working On A 3D Project With Billie Eilish

Maybe She’s Secretly Working For Cyberdyne?

It is not unlike Cameron to step away from blockbuster filmmaking to work on projects that get his creative neurons firing. He was an executive producer on 2012’s Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away. He filmed the 2003 IMAX 3D film Ghosts of the Abyss. He hosted the 2018 documentary series James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction. He wrote two episodes of Jessica Alba’s 2000s sci-fi television series Dark Angel. Basically, James Cameron has the clout to work on whatever interests him at any point in time and, at the moment, that apparently involves some sort of concert project with Billie Eilish.

Eilish has worked on numerous films herself, from short films like the body-shaming commentary Not My Responsibility to documentaries like Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry. She’s even been the focal point of a concert film in the past, with 2021’s Disney+ film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles blending live-action concert footage with animation. That particular concert film was co-directed by Robert Rodriguez of all people, so Eilish working with Cameron clearly isn’t out of the realm of possibility. So, at the end of the day, why not?
