Description

The animated musical fantasy KPop Demon Hunters has nothing in common with Adam Sandler’s latest sports comedy sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, but both movies have recently shared the same feat on the streaming platform, Netflix. July also saw the release of The Old Guard 2, which hasn’t made the warmest of impressions on Netflix subscribers, and a long list of older classics made the catalog, including the Mission: Impossible and The Karate Kid films, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the arrival of The Sandman season 2.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters centers around the Huntr/x K-pop girl band, who also partake in a spot of demon hunting, and their rivals, the Saja Boys, are demons posing as band members. KPop Demon Hunters left enough mystery to be answered in a sequel, but at the time of writing, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have not greenlit a successor feature.

Netflix subscribers can check out a popular thriller series that has a fun twist and a lot of potential for at least one more season.

Despite KPop Demon Hunters being an animated fantasy musical and Happy Gilmore 2 being a sports comedy, the two movies have one thing in common: Both features have become Netflix hits upon release, with KPop Demon Hunters becoming the streaming service’s most-watched animated movie ever, despite releasing one month before Happy Gilmore 2. The musical has spent six weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 Films, accumulating 26,300,000 views. Critics haven’t given Happy Gilmore 2 a warm reception, but the sequel debuted to 46.7 million views, as per Variety, securing the comedy as Netflix US’ biggest movie opening ever.

KPop Demon Hunters and Happy Gilmore 2 Are Both Netflix Hits

Directed by Kyle Newacheck, Happy Gilmore 2 is a direct sequel to the 1996 film of the same name, starring returning stars Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, and lead Sandler. The premise follows the titular widowed alcoholic who returns to professional golf to help finance his daughter’s ballet school. Happy Gilmore 2 endured a “painful change” regarding Carl Weathers’ passing, revealed by Sandler in a recent interview, but despite the creative adjustment, the sequel has been a massive success so far.

While KPop Demon Hunters and Happy Gilmore 2 continue to dominate the charts, the streaming service has a lot to offer that may claim the top spot, including five Netflix anime that could be binged in a weekend, such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Subscribers also have the third season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series, focusing on Ed Gein, to look forward to, and the murder mystery miniseries Untamed, starring Eric Bana and Sam Neill, is climbing the popularity chart as well.
