Despite there being literally thousands of Devil Fruits that have been shown in the One Piece story, there are a select few that have always been considered to be the most highly sought after. Most of the time, this is due to the fruit in question being absurdly powerful, to the point where it would grant the person who owns it enough strength to take on an entire army, so it’s pretty easy to understand why a lot of characters, especially the villains, would want to get their hands on them.
As a result of this, some of these Devil Fruits have actually switched users numerous times over the course of the plot. It’s honestly easy to understand why the Ope Ope fruit has garnered so much attention, since it really does feel like a Devil Fruit that can do pretty much anything. Not only was Law able to remove an incurable disease from his own body after acquiring the fruit, but he could also teleport, switch people’s bodies around, and even perform deadly attacks that can destroy an opponent from within their own body.
Blackbeard himself actually came very close to stealing this fruit after he almost succeeded in killing Law, and though he ultimately failed, it made it clear to the Heart Pirate’s captain that he had a pretty big target on his back. Anyone possessing a Devil Fruit this overpowered always needs to be watching over their shoulders at all times, since it’s one of those abilities that can drastically change a person’s life if they can manage to steal it away from Law’s grasp.

Though Kaido is already immensely strong in his base form, if he wants to get a little extra mobility and a few new powers, all he has to do is transform into the destructive azure dragon. As was made very clear throughout the Wano arc, the size and strength of this Zoan transformation make Kaido more or less unstoppable, to the point where he was easily able to erase entire towns with a single fire blast or by simply brushing past them with his gigantic body.
The fruit itself actually has a rather strange origin story, as it first popped up in God Valley, where it was almost eaten by Ivankov. However, moments before she could take it, Big Mom, who was also desperate to retrieve the fruit, barged into the room and stole it away, eventually handing it over to Kaido. After the future-Yonko consumed it for himself, it was made pretty clear that nobody else would be able to retrieve it, considering that killing Kaido is pretty much impossible, but despite that, it’s still heavily suggested that this fruit was a hot commodity when it was still lying around in God Valley.

When Thatch managed to get his hands on this Devil Fruit, it was pretty clear that he was over the moon with his latest find, since a fruit this strong would be one that many would be overjoyed to find out in the wild. In fact, Blackbeard would even kill Thatch and betray his own crew just so that he could obtain the ability for himself, which just goes to show how far some people are willing to go to acquire the strength they desire deep down.

He’s not the only one who had an interest in acquiring the fruit, though, as it also caught the eye of Blackbeard, who took it upon himself to kill Absalom so that he could gift the fruit to his loyal crewmate, Shiryu. Needless to say, several characters have been scrambling to retrieve this fruit, considering how versatile and dangerous it is, so it’s a shame that it’s ended up in the hands of a dangerous psychopath who is no doubt going to use it for his own immoral and wicked deeds.

This fruit is so highly sought-after that Doflamingo even organized an entire tournament at his Coliseum just to see who could win it. The combatants involved would fight tooth and nail just to get the chance of earning the fruit for themselves and their crews, so it’s a good thing Sabo was the one to eventually retrieve it, since things could have gotten pretty ugly if a villain had managed to beat him to it.

The fruit itself was actually kept in captivity by the Marines after they spent hundreds of years searching for it, but after it was stolen by Shanks and accidentally eaten by Luffy, they would desperately try to re-acquire it upon realizing the amount of damage it could do. In the Egghead arc, Luffy was able to fend off the Gorosei after utilizing his Devil Fruit to its full potential, making it crystal clear why the World Government at large is so desperate to get it out of the protagonist’s hands.
