The Old Guard 2 tops Netflix charts despite low Rotten Tomatoes score.
The action sequel receives criticism for lackluster plot and action scenes.
Fans speculate about The Old Guard 3 and potential new director.
One highly anticipated sequel to a successful action movie is doing well on Netflix, but it has a surprisingly low Rotten Tomatoes score.
It’s a busy summer for the streaming platform as fans get ready to dive into Wednesday season 2 part one, which will premiere on August 6th, 2025. Other notable releases include Squid Game season 3, which concluded the sad and compelling hit series, and Kevin Williamson’s family crime drama The Waterfront. There’s also the second and final season of The Sandman, which continues the dark fantasy tale. Now that fans have gotten the chance to check out the sequel to an action film that was released in 2020, they’re not thrilled with the plot. But, even though the sequel hasn’t gotten rave reviews from critics or audiences, it’s at the top of the Netflix charts.
Christina Ricci played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s, and it’s fun to go back and watch her beloved performance in a movie coming to Netflix soon.
The Old Guard 2 Is #1 On Netflix (Despite Its Low Rotten Tomatoes Score)
According to Flix Patrol, The Old Guard 2 has taken the number one spot on the Netflix charts, and the first movie, The Old Guard, is number four. However, the action sequel has an incredibly low Rotten Tomatoes rating of 24%, and 37% on the Popcornmeter.
The Old Guard was released in 2020 and is based on Leandro Fernández and Greg Rucka’s graphic novels. The film tells the story of mercenaries Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), Andromache of Scythia/Andy (Charlize Theron), and Joe (Marwan Kenzari), who will never die. But, when they realize that someone is aware of their abilities, they have to try to survive. The Old Guard 2 arrived on Netflix on July 2nd, 2025 and saw the main actors reprising their roles, along with Chiwetel Ejiofor. Henry Golding and Uma Thurman also star in the sequel. The bar is high for sequels since so many are nowhere near as gripping and fun as the original film, and unfortunately, many were left wanting more from this one.
While the original film fared much better with fans and critics and has an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, the sequel has been poorly received. Although fans were excited to see The Old Guard 2 and the fact that it’s number one on Netflix proves that viewers raced to check it out, the consensus is that it tells a lackluster tale and isn’t as fun as the first movie. Viewers discussed the sequel on Reddit and criticized the action scenes and the overall plot, which finds Andy facing a situation she never has before. Although The Old Guard ended on an exciting note, the sequel isn’t quite as thrilling.

Given The Old Guard and The Old Guard 2‘s popularity, fans are curious if The Old Guard 3 will be made. Theron addressed this in an interview with The Hollywood Reporterand said:
“This was always where we wanted to land the film, and it’s also very reminiscent of the first one. So we treated this one exactly the same, but I’m being completely honest when I say that we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”
If Netflix wants to make a third movie, it will have a new director. Victoria Mahoney told The Direct, “someone else will take that mantle in a wonderful, exciting way, and I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but I know it’ll be great.”
While fans might not have enjoyed The Old Guard 2, they can look forward to seeing Theron on the big screen again in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. She will also star in the thriller Apex alongside Eric Bana and Taron Egerton.
