The Nintendo Switch 2 has five more games that have been added to the list of its fully functional backwards-compatible catalog following a system update from last week. Backwards compatibility has been a big selling point for the Nintendo Switch 2, as Nintendo has tried to give players access to as many games from its last-generation hybrid console as possible, and that list is continuing to grow.
Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2’s backwards-compatibility features back in January, stating that it would be capable of playing both physical and digital copies of games built for the original Switch, although some games would not be supported. Following the new console’s launch on June 5, which already supported a massive array of Switch games, a mid-July update added or fixed access to 25 more titles, including MMO adventure game Sky: Children of the Light and puzzle platformer Portal 2.
Switch 2’s Newly Fixed Backwards-Compatible Games
Cotton Reboot High Tension
D.C.III: Da Capo III – Plus Story
DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition
Disgaea 7
Vagante
The Switch 20.3.0 operating system update was released on July 28, bringing stability upgrades to both the Switch and Switch 2 and improving HDR settings on the new console. But one easily overlooked feature that came alongside that update is the addition of five more Switch games that will now run properly on Switch 2 hardware, including DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition, Disgaea 7, and Vagante, according to a report from Nintendo Everything. The list isn’t nearly as extensive as the one that came with the mid-July update and includes some Japanese exclusives like visual novel DCIII: De Capo III – Plus Story and shoot ’em up Cotton Reboot! High Tension!, but Western fans still have three more Switch games that they should now be able to play on the Switch 2 without any issues.
Possibly the biggest name on this list is strategy RPG Disgaea 7, which was originally released in 2023. While not as popular in the West, Disgaea has some similarities with Atlus’ Persona series in terms of its anime-inspired visuals, mythological elements, and taming of monsters, though Disgaea does so in a gameplay style akin to Final Fantasy Tactics. Also joining the Switch 2 catalog are Nuke Nine’s action platformer Vagante and the Nintendo Switch version of space trading and combat simulator DarkStar One, which was originally released in 2006 and remastered for the Switch in June 2024.
Backwards compatibility has been a pretty big deal for Switch 2 owners in the console’s early days, as the Switch 2 launch catalog has left some feeling underwhelmed. However, in the nearly two months since the console’s release, Donkey Kong Bananza has become one of the highest-rated games of 2025 on any platform, and Nintendo fans have plenty more to look forward to throughout the year, with Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Octopath Traveler 0, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds being some key highlights.
