The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to smash sales records across the globe, with recent numbers from Japanese retailers totaling up to over 1.5 million consoles sold in Japan alone, making it the biggest video game system launch in Japanese history. Nintendo’s Switch 2 originally launched on June 5, 2025, and has already managed to knock some of the most iconic gaming systems of all time off the top of the historic sales charts.

A report from early July 2025 showed that Nintendo Switch 2 sales had already surpassed 5 million units globally, breaking the record for the fastest-selling video game console. It is estimated that the Switch 2 sold roughly 1.1 million systems in its first week of launch in the United States, and it should come as no surprise that Nintendo’s home country of Japan is also showing milestone sales numbers for the hit console.

One of the highest-rated video games of 2025 is also one of the newest Nintendo Switch exclusives, earning early praise from critics.

Data obtained by Japanese media outlet Yomiuri reveals that Nintendo sold 1,538,260 Switch 2 units in Japan within its first month of launch. This puts the Switch 2 above the Game Boy Advance, which Yomiuri notes as having sold 1,367,433 units within one month of release in Japan. GBA previously held the record for fastest-selling gaming console in Japan since 2001. Other consoles that have been outpaced by the Switch 2 include the PS5, which sold approximately 3.4 million units globally in its first month, and the PS2 and Nintendo DS, which both sold over 1 million systems in Japan within one month of launch. For the Switch 2 to financially rank among the best-selling consoles of all time just one month after its debut has been noted by many as a crowning achievement to kickstart the newest era of Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Records

In addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 itself, one of the console’s biggest exclusives, Mario Kart World, has also hit a major sales milestone. Mario Kart World sales topped 1 million physical unit sales in Japan alone in less than a month of its initial launch on June 5, with an even higher total count for game sales when including digital editions and those included in the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle. With the holiday season rapidly approaching and more exclusive Switch 2 bundles featuring Pokemon on the way, analysts predict that Switch 2 year-one total sales could break even more records.

The Switch 2 continues to hit new milestones, with exclusives like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza topping sales charts. Only time will tell if the Nintendo Switch 2 can top its predecessor, the original Switch, as the best-selling console of all time, but early sales feats have many feeling optimistic about the system’s future.
