Immediately after Oda revealed that Loki idolized Rocks, it became clear to the fans that Rocks D. Xebec would play a major role in One Piece’s Elbaf arc. Now, Oda has revealed a lot of lore about Rocks, as well as his pirate crew, and fans couldn’t be more excited.

When Rocks was first introduced in the story, fans were immediately told that he held unparalleled strength, and at the same time, that he had under him the greatest crew in One Piece. The likes of Kaido, Big Mom, Whitebeard, Shiki, Wang Zhi, Captain John, and many others eventually joined the Rocks Pirates and this was shocking to all. Even the Marines of the One Piece world weren’t entirely sure what was going on with the Rocks Pirates and how one crew could’ve had this many monsters.

Now, it seems that Oda has made the answer clear to all. The Rocks Pirates didn’t willingly band together. None of them had great love for each other. The only reason why the Rocks Pirates even assembled is because of the Davy Back Fights of the One Piece world.

For those who don’t know what Davy Back Fights are or skipped over this part of the story, these fights are essentially pirate games that allow two captains to take crewmates from each other’s crews. Usually, three games from a Davy Back Fight, but it can be more or less. Once a round is won, a crewmate can be freely taken by the captain.

This is precisely how Rocks D. Xebec built the Rocks Pirates. By continually beating one crew after another, he took all the powerful members of the crew and went on to establish what came to be known as the Rocks Pirates. Rocks possibly defeated the likes of Kaido, Big Mom, and possibly even Whitebeard.
Why The Rocks Pirates Failed
Ironically, the very reason why this crew was so strong is why it ended up failing. Rocks D. Xebec’s crewmates didn’t have any love for each other and there was camaraderie. The crew was there in name only, and this is what eventually led to its downfall. On the island of God Valley, 38 years ago, Rocks D. Xebec was defeated by none other than Roger, thanks to the help from Garp. It was here that Rocks supposedly fell, and this led to the Age of Roger finally beginning.
