Pokemon GO is making a change to how many players can participate in a Gigantamax Battle. The increase could be beneficial to players, but fans are already pointing out some potential complications this change could make to the Pokemon GO Gigantamax Battle meta.
Eternatus has arrived in Pokemon GO, with players who attended the Pokemon World Championships in Anaheim getting the first opportunity to get Eternatus Eternamax. The new change to Gigantamax Battles begins with Pokemon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale, and applies to fights with Eternatus, as well as standard Gigantamax fights.
Pokemon GO has now revealed that a change to the number of participants in Gigantamax Battles is going into effect alongside the community’s battle with Eternamax Eternatus. Beginning in the Max Finale, groups of up to 100 Pokemon trainers will be able to enter the same battle against Gigantamax Pokemon or Eternamax Eternatus. Trainers will be split into groups of four or fewer. The alteration will impact players worldwide, and will remain in effect once the fight against Eternatus is complete. The game bulletin notes that the more trainers who participate, the greater the odds of winning, but players aren’t entirely sure about this new change just yet.
Previously, Pokemon GO players were limited to joining with 40 trainers, which makes this a substantial alteration. Thus far, fans seem to think that the idea of increasing the group limit to 100 may not be as beneficial as it initially seems. Fans have wondered if this could mean that the difficulty of the battles will be scaled or increased. Others have voiced concerns for the rural players of the game, pointing out that some groups had difficulty finding enough members prior to this increase. Others are sharing a renewed call for a matchmaking feature to be added. Some even voiced that they were disappointed to see the game move in this direction, as they would have preferred to see the number of players per group reduced, and difficulty adjusted accordingly.
While this is being referred to as a permanent change, online games are always subject to adjustment. If this new expanded number turns out to be a hindrance to most players rather than a boon, it’s possible that further changes could be made in the future. Once most of Pokemon GO‘s active players have had an opportunity to battle against Eternamax Eternatus, there may be a stronger consensus on whether this was the right move for the developers to make.
