Description

The PlayStation 4 has received system update 13.00, a staggering 12 years after the console originally launched. The PlayStation 4 was a massive success for Sony, and even though its successor has already been out for five years, there are millions of gamers that still have yet to upgrade to the latest hardware. The PS4 is still getting brand-new game releases in 2025, and that is no doubt contributing significantly to the console’s longevity.

Even though the PS4 was first released in 2013, there are still high-quality, brand-new games releasing for it on a regular basis. Popular live-service hero shooter Marvel Rivals just released its PS4 version, and the critically-acclaimed Hollow Knight: Silksong, one of the highest-rated new game releases of the year, has also released for PS4. There is still clearly interest in the PS4, and so it makes sense that Sony is still releasing new console updates for it.

PS4 console update 13.00 is available to download right now. The new PS4 system update doesn’t do much beyond improving “messages and usability on some screens,” but considering where we’re at in the console’s lifespan, it’s safe to say no one was really expecting new features or anything more substantial.

Even though Sony is still releasing new updates for the PS4 on occasion, support for the console does seem to be dying out. Live-service games like Genshin Impact are winding down PS4 support, and it’s been reported that 2026 will see many more live-service titles leave the PS4 behind entirely. Not only that, but Sony itself is starting to focus more on the PlayStation 5 than ever before. There aren’t many cross-gen games anymore and Sony is even starting to shift the focus of PlayStation Plus from PS4 to PS5.

It was announced earlier this year that, starting in January 2026, PlayStation Plus will no longer make PS4 a priority. This means that even though there may still be PS4 games added to the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers of PlayStation Plus beyond January, they won’t be guaranteed. Those that have yet to upgrade to the PS5 may want to do so at some point in the near future, but if so, they should be aware of a couple of recent issues.

For one, the PS5 price has increased by $50 thanks to the Trump administration’s tariffs, and two, Sony is now releasing PS5 consoles with less storage capacity than the older models. It’s possible the PS5 will get a price cut and the storage situation will be resolved, but it’s unlikely to be any time soon.
