Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally here. Well, not yet, technically. But it’s also no longer a pipe dream, a figment of fans’ imaginations, or an imperceptibly long way away. Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date, September 4, 2025, was revealed on August 21, which has graciously given fans two weeks to eke in an umpteenth Hollow Knight playthrough, committed to its proposed release window of 2025, and promised fans that the wait had almost ended.
So, now that nobody can deny the existence of Hollow Knight: Silksong, it’s going to be exhilarating to discover what the quality of the sequel will be like compared to its predecessor. And, with memes regarding its spectral lack of a presence put to bed, it’ll be interesting to see what game’s fanbase dons the clown nose that Hollow Knight: Silksong fans have been wearing for the last seven years. If any game has the gravitas and magnitude to compete with Hollow Knight: Silksong’s esteemed and irrevocable reputation, it’s FromSoftware’s Bloodborne.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is Real, and It’s Nearly Here
For the last half of a decade, Hollow Knight: Silksong was in limbo as far as its fanbase and community were concerned. It wasn’t necessarily that fans believed it to be canceled or shelved, but, with so much time spent in complete silence about Hollow Knight: Silksong’s development progress, it was only natural that paranoia would ensue and they’d begin overthinking or jumping to the worst conclusions.
Of course, Team Cherry has never owed fans any explanation as to why it has been so tight-lipped about the sequel’s development, though it’s also not surprising that fans would resort to all sorts of delusions and speculation in the meantime.
The clown makeup and ‘copium’ memes were born of fans perpetually hoping to see something from Hollow Knight: Silksong and constantly being disappointed by their own misplaced expectations. Plus, without Team Cherry ever actually stating that it would appear somewhere before it was announced that there would be a Hollow Knight: Silksong demo at gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and Melbourne, Australia’s Game Worlds exhibit at ACMI, fans did indeed earn the clown makeup for anticipating that something would manifest out of thin air at one of Geoff Keighley’s annual Summer Game Fests or Game Awards.
Nonetheless, Hollow Knight: Silksong was at least a game that fans knew was on the horizon for the better half of the last decade. Bloodborne fans, however, are likely never going to receive any semblance of closure from their desires.
Bloodborne is a Distant Memory, and That May Be All It Ever is
Bloodborne fans haven’t been picky. A remaster, remake, sequel—hell, they’d even take a PC port. That said, it’s hard to assume that anything Bloodborne-related will actually transpire when FromSoftware and Sony have done nearly nothing to instill that hope in the first place. Bloodborne is currently confined to its tomb, a lone PlayStation 4 version, and it will forever be a cavern glittering with gold for PlayStation to mine, yet it has chosen not to for whatever reason.
This ironically hasn’t quelled fans’ fantasies of seeing Bloodborne again, and it hasn’t been easy to move on. Rather, adding another layer of frosting to Bloodborne’s multi-tiered ‘copium’ cake, the silence around any hypothetical Bloodborne project could echo the same sentiments of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s own, with the bonus that nothing has been announced and it could therefore be equal parts a balm and a surprise.
If any game has the gravitas and magnitude to compete with Hollow Knight: Silksong’s esteemed and irrevocable reputation, it’s FromSoftware’s Bloodborne.
PlayStation’s Bloodborne tease seemed brazen and transparent enough to suggest that fans should continue to ‘persist,’ so to speak. Still, until anything legitimate is revealed, there’s a chance Bloodborne is dead and buried, and its devoted fanbase may find it more productive to look forward to its supposed spiritual successor, The Duskbloods, instead.
