Slay the Spire 2 has had its released date pushed back, moving it from a 2025 release window into 2026. Slay the Spire 2‘s postponement is one of the latest of many game delays that have been announced so far in 2025.
Gamers of all kinds have been impacted by game delays this year, with everything from indie games like Little Witch in the Woods to AAA producers like Ubisoft delaying games. While no less than seven games have been delayed purely due to Hollow Knight: Silksong launching, others have chosen to delay due to needing more time to polish a title or to iron out bugs.
Slay the Spire 2 Developers Announce Delay
Fans of Slay the Spire will likely be disappointed to hear that the awaited sequel has been delayed, moving its release window from 2025 to sometime in 2026. The developers announced the move, and stated that despite the synchronistic timing, the delay of Slay the Spire 2 had nothing to do with the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. The team was apparently already determining when the new release window would be before Silksong’s release date was revealed. So far, Mega Crit hasn’t stated an exact date for the game’s launch, but said it will release on a Thursday in March 2026.
While some players will no doubt be sad to hear that they won’t be getting to try out Slay the Spire 2 in 2025 as planned, there is a good reason for the delay. The developers explained that the sequel has much more content than the original, and that they want to be sure that the game has the quality that their fans have come to expect. One example they gave of the new content and scope was that players will be given two branches with “radically” different environments, enemies, and events in each act, providing a lot more replayability and variety per playthrough. The first act will contain the paths Overgrowth, which is supposed to look like an overgrown ruin, and Underdocks, which is a waterway connected to the Spire’s sewer system.
Though most players see delays as a negative, it’s often a necessity, either to ensure a game is up to standards, like Slay the Spire 2, or simply because developers don’t want to see their games get run over by a bigger title. The Ghost of Yotei team notably celebrated when GTA 6 was delayed, as it will no longer compete with GTA 6 since Rockstar’s game was moved into mid-2026. With any luck, the Slay the Spire 2 delay leads to a solid game that players love.
