Description

Summary

  • Omni-King Zeno is the most powerful being in the Dragon Ball multiverse, capable of creating and erasing universes at will.
  • Grand Priest is the leader of the angels and ranks high in terms of strength, potentially in the top five characters across all universes.
  • Whis and the Angels, with Whis being stronger than Beerus, are the strongest beings of their respective universes, including Black Frieza and Gas.

The Dragon Ball series is filled with some of the strongest characters across anime history, with even early series characters being capable of casually blowing up planets with finger beams. While the Saiyans, with their insatiable thirst for battle and constant training, are at the center of power scaling discussions, there are plenty of non-Saiyan characters in the series that are incredibly powerful as well and can give Goku, Vegeta, and gang a run for their money.

The cast of Dragon Ball Super continues to expand upon the series’ mainstays. Here’s what you need to know about the most important characters.

The Dragon Ball Super manga has elevated strength feats to new heights, with some characters far surpassing even the strongest Saiyans in the series. From Gods of Destruction to creators of the universe, and some naturally strong characters that have comparable feats, Dragon Ball is constantly pushing the limits for strong anime characters.

Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

1

Omni-King Grand Zeno

The Most Powerful Being In The Dragon Ball Multiverse

Zeno Sama Dragon Ball Super

The Omni-King, also known as “Zeno,” is the ruler of the Dragon Ball multiverse and its most powerful being. He was introduced in Dragon Ball Super during the Universal tournament arc, and his characterization as an immature, childish persona has stirred quite some debate among fans of the franchise on whether or not he’s a good character.

Regardless of the quality of his characterisation, it’s an undeniable fact that he is by far the most powerful character in the Dragon Ball series, and is going to remain so for the foreseeable future. He can casually create and erase entire universes on a whim.

Grand Priest

The Leader Of The Angels Is Second Only To Zeno

Grand Priest in Dragon Ball

  • Manga: Dragon Ball Super
  • Chapter: 28
  • Release: September 21, 2017
  • Written By: Akira Toriyama

As far as feats go, there aren’t a lot with the Grand Priest, but descriptions from other characters, and his role as depicted in the Dragon Ball Super series, pretty much place him in the top echelon of characters when it comes to strength. His position is that of a leader among all the angels of the Multiverse, each of which is the designated caretaker and teacher for the Gods of Destruction of each universe. Considering every angel is the most powerful being of their respective Universe, this makes the Grand Priest a multiversal entity.

Furthermore, Whis pretty much states that he’s in the “top five battle powers in all universes.” An interesting statement to make, that indicates there are a few unrevealed characters who are even stronger than him, but since they’re yet to make an appearance, he’s pretty much the second strongest character in the series so far.

3

Whis & The Angels

Every Angel Is The Strongest Being Of Their Universe

Whis in Dragon Ball (3)

Whis is one of the first new characters introduced in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, and he ups the ante for power levels in the franchise. There were momentary rumblings that he could be the strongest character in the series when he revealed that he’s stronger than Beerus and also his trainer, until it was revealed there are more like him and a few characters above him in the Multiversal hierarchy.

Dragon Ball: Every Character Whis Has Mentored

Whis is a character who’s way stronger than he initially seems. Though he hasn’t mentored many characters, the list is notable.

As an Angel, Whis is permanently in a state of Ultra Instinct, a state of being that took Goku a long time to master and is still not at its best with him. It’s also likely that all the other angels like Whis are just as powerful, if not more.

4

Beerus

It’s Speculated He’s The Strongest God Of Destruction

Beerus is completely unfazed by a Super Saiyan 3 Goku on King Kai's planet in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013)

When Beerus makes an appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, he casually defeats Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 form with a single flick. Even after Goku achieves the fabled Super Saiyan God form, it’s still not enough to push Beerus to even break a sweat. As a God of Destruction, he can erase anything in existence, whether that is a planet, a solar system, or any character.

The manga later reveals that even among the Gods of Destruction, Beerus is a force to be reckoned with and takes on all the other Gods of Destruction in front of the Omni-King without much trouble. The series goes out of its way to elaborate that Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan still have a ways to go before they can match him in terms of strength.

Black Frieza

  • Manga: Dragon Ball Super
  • Chapter: 87
  • Release: August 19, 2022
  • Written By: Akira Toriyama

Just when people thought Frieza had hit his peak with his Golden form, the scheming villain went on to gain an even more powerful form that completely overpowered Goku and Vegeta at their strongest. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Frieza makes an appearance toward the end of the Granola arc in a new form he calls “Black Frieza.” This arc raised the benchmark for Goku and Vegeta multiple times, with Granola first using the Dragon Balls to become the strongest warrior in the Universe, and then Gas doing the same.

However, Frieza arrives at the end of the arc, with Gas being defeated in his Black Frieza form, which he achieves by training in the realm of spirit and time. In this form, he takes out both Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms with ease. The next arc in the manga will likely have him as the villain for the Z warriors to defeat. The manga states he’s “almost as strong as a God of Destruction” in this form, putting him in Beerus’ league.

6

Gas

Was The Strongest Warrior In The Universe At One Point

  • Chapter: 80
  • Release: January 20, 2022
  • Written By: Akira Toriyama

Gas is a member of the Heeters, a family of rich and powerful beings who served under Frieza as intermediaries for the planets he conquered. After Granola enacts his plan to become the strongest warrior in the universe using the Dragon Balls, the Heeters find out and do the same for Gas after Granola achieves his power, making Gas an even stronger warrior than Granola, at the cost of much of his lifespan.

Dragon Ball Super features a unique villainous group known as the Heeters. Here’s what fans need to know about these characters.

In his strongest form, he is seemingly nigh undefeatable, even with Granola on Goku and Vegeta’s side, until it takes a desperate attack from Granola, much like the Spirit Bomb, to seemingly defeat him. Gas is still alive, but is quickly killed off by Black Frieza, taking advantage of his nearly decomposed body.

Granola

Was Also The Strongest Warrior In The Universe At One Point

Dragon Ball Super Granolah

  • Manga: Dragon Ball Super
  • Chapter: 67
  • Release: December 20, 2020
  • Written By: Akira Toriyama

Introduced as the titular character of the Granola the Survivor arc in the Dragon Ball Super manga, Granola is a Cerelean bounty hunter who works for the Heeters. He’s the sole survivor of the Cerelean race, whose planet was destroyed by the Saiyans who were working under Frieza. Seeking revenge on Frieza for ordering his planet’s destruction, he uses the Dragon Balls to become the strongest warrior in the universe, at the cost of half his lifespan.

In this state, he battles Goku and Vegeta in their most powerful forms and handily defeats them. Neither Goku in his Mastered Ultra Instinct state, nor Vegeta in his Ultra Ego state, can defeat the powerful Cerelean. Eventually, his power is usurped by Gas and then later by Black Frieza, but Granola is still one of the strongest characters in the Dragon Ball universe.

8

Orange Piccolo

Piccolo’s Most Powerful Form Keeps Up With The Saiyans

Piccolo in his orange form in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Both Piccolo and Gohan gain huge power-ups in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero during their battle with Cell Max. Piccolo uses the Dragon Balls to unlock his full potential in terms of strength, foreseeing the threat that the new Androids present. In doing so, he unlocks the Orange Piccolo state during his battle against Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. He defeats Gamma 2 in a single punch in this state and battles evenly against an enraged Cell Max, whom Gohan eventually defeats in his beast form.

In an interview, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama claimed that Gohan and Piccolo are now on par with Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms, with Gohan being the strongest mortal character. This was before the Granola arc, of course, so it indicates that Piccolo in his Orange form is as strong as Goku in his Mastered Ultra Instinct state and Vegeta in his Ultra Ego state.

9

Moro

The Powerful Wizard Pushed Ultra Instinct Goku To His Limits

Dragon Ball Super Moro Attacks

Moro is an ancient wizard who possesses the unique ability to absorb ki and increase his strength. He’s the main antagonist of the Moro arc after he gets released from a galactic prison. During his initial confrontation with Goku, he is in a significantly weakened state after his stint in the galactic prison, which lasted centuries. Despite this, he outsmarted Goku and managed to defeat him, draining his Ki in his Super Saiyan Blue form.

In his final battle, Moro was capable of going toe to toe with Goku in his Mastered Ultra Instinct state, and this was a Goku who was stronger than his fight against Jiren in the Tournament of Power arc.

10

Jiren

Said To Be Even Stronger Than A God Of Destruction

Jiren in Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super

Jiren is a character introduced during the Tournament of Power arc and establishes new heights for power scaling in the Dragon Ball universe. In the anime, he’s stated to be even stronger than Belmod, the God of Destruction of his universe. Jiren initially appears to be a mysteriously powerful contender in the Tournament of Power, and barely participates unless his team seems to be in trouble.

He is then attacked by Goku, who uses all his transformations against Jiren, which doesn’t even make him flinch. Even after Goku unlocks his Mastered Ultra Instinct form, Jiren can fight against him on even footing, or is at the very least, close in terms of strength. While some characters from the later arcs are stronger than him, Jiren is still one of the strongest mortals in the Dragon Ball universe.
