Nicotero serves as showrunner and executive producer for the immersive 6-episode reality show premiering very soon, and is described as Survivor meets The Blair Witch Project.
Nicotero is known for his work on The Walking Dead, as well as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and Creepshow and even though many of the juicy details weren’t available when the series was officially announced a few months ago, fans now have a little more information to digest as the series aims to “flip the script on the traditional competition show – thrusting players into an immersive horror experience full of unexpected challenges.” Guts & Glory, which features sponsorship by Hyundai, is set to debut on both Shudder and AMC+ in the U.S. and Canada. Alongside Nicotero, executive producers who will bring the intriguing and frankly freaky sounding series to life include Brian Witten from Monster Agency Productions, Chris Wagner from White Label, Andrew Molina from Salaryman, and Jeffrey F. January, who will serve as co-executive producer.

Guts & Glory Reality TV Show Gets First Look Images of ‘Immersive Horror Experience’
As reported by The Wrap, Shudder shared a first look at its new, unscripted horror-based competition series Guts & Glory at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Never a stranger to guts or gore, as seen in The Walking Dead, Greg Nicotero will bring his years of experience doing incredible special effects makeup for many shows over the last 40 years, with his very first job beginning on George A. Romero’s 1985 film, Day of the Dead. In 1988, Nicotero formed KNB EFX Group, a special make-up effects studio which went on to win an Emmy Award in 2001 for Frank Herbert’s Dune and an Academy Award in 2006 for achievement in make-up for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
In April, when the series was officially announced, Nicotero said that he “couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity to explore this new landscape. To marry a non-scripted competition show with a genre narrative lands along the lines of if ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Blair Witch Project’ had a baby.” He went on to explain Guts & Glory is “one of the most creative and organic things I’ve ever done, creating FX that have to happen live in real time and capturing the honest reactions… all the while fighting to see who the winner will be. To add to the mayhem, I also got to reunite many of the key crew members from the ‘Walking Dead’ universe to help bring this show to life.”
In the new first-look images, Nicotero can be seen leaning over a huge bloated corpse of some kind, with its stomach split open and decomposing gray skin, more than enough to give the most hardened horror fan nightmares. Rob Fox, EVP of production for AMC Networks, previously said, “If you know horror, you know the innovation and creativity that Greg Nicotero brings to the genre. His legendary special effects work has given audiences a fresh and thrilling take on familiar genre staples, from his notorious walkers of The Walking Dead to the monsters of Creepshow and more, never failing to shock and scare,“ Fox continues. “We’re thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with Greg in bringing his unique concept to life with moments and scenarios that shock, surprise and showcase the depth of this genre.“
Guts & Glory premieres on September 9, 2025, on both Shudder and AMC+
