Steam is home to a wonderful variety of different games. From major AAA hits to smaller, simplistic indie darlings, the platform has become one of the greatest hubs for gaming diversity. One of the best aspects of Steam is that sometimes the most-played games on the platform are completely unexpected.
Just a few days ago, a game called Banana was in Steam’s top 10 most-played. Banana is a simple idle clicker game that practically has zero gameplay beyond that. Such a title among heavy-hitters like Apex Legends and the Battlefield 6 open beta is a hilarious example of how some of the most surprising projects can get put in the spotlight. This week continues this trend, as Bongo Cat is close to breaking into Steam’s top 10 this time around.
Those who are internet veterans will quickly recognize the main character in Bongo Cat. This adorable bongo-loving feline was originally a meme created by Twitter users StrayRogue and DitzyFlama, with the former drawing the image and the latter animating the viral video. This meme has taken many different shapes and forms, and now, it lives on as a simple desktop game.
At the time of writing this article, Bongo Cat sits at #13 on Steam’s Most-Played list.
Technically, Bongo Cat is closer to an application than a video game, but there are game-like properties that make it more of a hybrid of the two. So, while Bongo Cat may not be a game in the traditional sense, it makes one’s daily tasks on the computer a more engaging experience. Once downloaded, the titular kitty percussionist sits on one’s taskbar, and with each key pressed while typing, the adorable cat slaps away on its bongos, racking up points. Steam is filled with simplistic titles, and Bongo Cat is about as straightforward as it gets.
The original Bongo Cat meme first graced the internet back in 2018.
As players collect more points with each new keystroke, the chances of winning hats for Bongo Cat increase. Collecting special headgear for the cat allows players to customize the character how they see fit, which helps make Bongo Cat feel more like a game. It’s a fun blend, as it technically acts as an idle game, but it requires productivity to win more rewards. Steam has helped introduce gamers to titles that may not have gotten a spotlight otherwise, and it’s proven to be a solid home for Bongo Cat.
Since launching, Bongo Cat has amassed an impressive amount of strong, positive feedback. As of now, the game’s Steam rating is “Overwhelmingly Positive” with over 33,500 reviews from users. Steam’s indie offerings can often be some of the best titles to jump into, and Bongo Cat is continuing to show that some of the best options to try out are some of the most surprising.
Right now, it’s unclear if Bongo Cat will crack Steam’s top 10 list this week, but at this rate, it’s definitely possible. Even if it doesn’t get into the top 10, it’s still great to see such a simple premise attract such a large number of players. As is tradition with Steam’s long list of games, Bongo Cat serves as a great example of how sometimes the smallest projects can have a huge impact.
