Borderlands 4 can be an overwhelming adventure if players have never stepped onto Kairos before. With Borderlands 4 featuring far more activities than any previous game in the series, along with a fresh new open-world, it’ll serve fans of the franchise and new players alike rather well to know some beginner tips to get them started. These tips in Borderlands 4 will delve into things that the game doesn’t tell you so that you can have the best time possible from start to finish.
It can’t be understated how regularly players might just pick up a weapon because it’s a shiny new rarity, without actually seeing what the weapon does. There are billions upon billions of weapons and gear items in Borderlands 4, so it’s essential to check carefully before deciding to roll with what’s been picked up. Players should always read the stats that they have available to them to see if the DPS is better, what element the weapon runs, the different firing modes, and what weapon parts are present. Reading gear before picking it up will ensure that you know what to expect when you next pull the trigger, and it can be the difference in making or breaking a build.
Ordnance weapons have replaced the grenade slot, allowing players to either rain fire on their enemies with LMGs, Rocket Launchers, Pulse Cannons, or even more grenades. Ordnance weapons are extremely underrated and should be used just as commonly as your primary weapons. Ordnance weapons have a cooldown for a reason, and that’s because they can deal intense damage, so be sure to use them more liberally. As for Action Skills, these also have cooldowns and should be used in survival situations or encounters when enemies are overwhelming. Mixing Action Skills and Ordnance Weapons is a great way to stay on top of the corpses instead of joining the piles.
There are two new movement mechanics to focus on for Borderlands 4. There’s the grappling hook and the jetpack. With the grapple hook, players can look up to find grapple points that allow them to propel forward and upwards, gaining momentum to avoid gunfire from enemies below. There’s also the jetpack, which allows players to dash around both on the ground and in the air, allowing an aerial assault that will make enemies miss their shots as you move around. Try to stay on the move during combat to avoid getting hit, while also gaining appropriate speeds to make sure nobody can mess with you. But if extra movement isn’t your thing, then feel free to keep your feet on the ground with a gun in hand.
With Borderlands 4 going open-world, things can get a little hectic and confusing with directions. Sure, players can summon a vehicle anywhere and fast travel from the map, but often the direction where players should go isn’t the clearest, and roads won’t lead you everywhere you want to go. As such, use Z to summon ECHO-4, who will locate the best path forward. ECHO-4 will showcase a line that players can follow, and when summoned, he can also highlight certain interactables, like points where players can grapple, or destructible environments that may just reveal unique secrets and loot.
Borderlands 4 has 3 distinct enemy health types. While there are countless enemies roaming around Kairos to be killed and looted, they fall into three categories: Flesh, Shield, and Armor. These categories are noted for having red health bars, blue health bars, and yellow health bars, respectively. Each of these health types is weak to certain elements and strong against others, so always check the elemental type that you’re using to make sure it’s actually effective against the enemy you are fighting. For basic principles, Shock is for Shield, Fire is for Flesh, and Corrosive is for Armor, but some other elements deal fairly decent damage against these enemies.
Part of the charm of Borderlands 4 comes from its promise of loot, and there is tons of it. In fact, there are endless amounts of it! With so much loot to be found in chests, from corpses, and of course, bosses, players really should think about what to keep and what to sell. However, trying to sell loot in the midst of what you want to keep can be rather frustrating, which is why when you hover over an item on the floor, you can select Q to tag it as Junk. When an item is Junk, players can head to a vending machine and click Q to sell all items with the Junk tag, making selling gear that’s not to your standards all too easy.
Starting off might make players seem like they’re a tad weaker than most, especially when they can hardly carry anything in the backpack or hold more ammunition. Therefore, it’s wise to invest immediately in the SDU slots available from the inventory menu. Players can spend SDU Tokens on Storage Deck Upgrades, allowing them to invest in greater ammo capacity for their preferred weapons of choice, along with additional storage in backpack and vault spaces. Players should focus on activities scattered around the open world to unlock SDU Tokens so that they are never running empty on ammo or running too full on useless loot.
In previous games, players might save certain side missions and main story missions for when they’re a higher level, so that the weapon that they claim as a reward scales. Worry not, as Borderlands 4 doesn’t feature this same issue. There’s not much mission-exclusive gear to be claimed, and most of it is completely random. However, it is worth noting that Borderlands 4 has a replay function, meaning that just from the menu, players can select a side mission or a story mission to replay, which ends in them receiving plenty of rewards mentioned in the mission tab before restarting. Replaying missions is great for farming and attempting to get superior loot drops, so don’t worry about jumping into a mission if your level is too low, as you can always just redo it later. The same goes for boss fights, where players can farm legendary items from previously defeated bosses by heading to their arena and activating Moxxi’s Big Encore, thus allowing a great method of early-game farming.
