What Happens with APAS?

Does the Threat of AI Remain?

apas's president and sam

One of the running themes of Death Stranding 2 is the dangers of AI, and how, left unchecked and able to grow, it will consume everything. Porters are no longer needed thanks to AI and APAS’ advancements that allow for dangerous journeys to be taken by bots to avoid the risk of a voidout, but it becomes clear when the President reveals himself as an AI that human connection is more important than ever. APAS was the result of thousands of souls connecting their Beach to the Chiral Network in a convergence of sentience, and their goal was to keep humanity safe simply by eradicating the need for flesh outside of safety and bunkers, to restrict movement and freedom. While Die-Hardman has prevented APAS plans with his own Q-pid, it seems that APAS still runs amok somewhat due to how some preppers are already dead, even if they don’t know it, and bots seem to deliver parcels across Australia when time passes and shows that Tomorrow is moving on.

How was Stillbaby Syndrome Cured?

Rainy Manages to Have Her Child, But How?

rainy with her baby

One of the biggest tragedies of the Death Stranding is the Stillbaby Syndrome, which is where every mother is stuck at 7 months pregnant. The baby is not dead, but trapped in time, refusing to grow any further. While attempts to cure Stillbaby Syndrome have been unsuccessful, it seems that by the time the world moves on from connecting Australia to the Chiral Network, the condition has been cured, as Tomorrow is seen holding a Polaroid photograph of her newborn. Was Stillbaby Syndrome the result of the Chiral Network connection growing stronger, or just genius technology?

Is Fragile a Ghost?

Does Fragile Endlessly Wander the Realm of the Dead?

fragile as a ghost

Fragile’s Ka and Ha were separated when Higgs shot her in an attempt to kill her and Lou. Fragile’s jump managed to teleport Lou to the land of the dead, where she would be protected by Neil in Nirvana, but the separated Ka and Ha of Fragile meant that she was already dead, surviving long enough in her physical body just to travel with Sam for a little longer. With her death, Fragile speaks to Sam one last time and tells him that he will never be alone and that death can’t tear us apart. Fragile seems to leave, apparent in her Beach form, but does this mean that part of her lives on, just unable to physically interact with the real world?

Is Higgs Finally Dead?

This Wouldn’t Be the First Time He’s Cheated Death

sam vs higgs in a guitar battle

If there’s anything Hideo Kojima loves (more than Troy Baker), it’s a returning villain. Ocelot seemed to be the foe in Metal Gear that never died, and perhaps (hopefully) Higgs is the foe that has that title in Death Stranding. Higgs may have been swallowed by a giant extinction entity of baby Lou, crunched in a baby’s mouth with a golden mask spat out, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Higgs can teleport away, and he’s been known to cheat death before, so why would a potential BB snack be any different? Higgs might have a fitting end, swallowed by the very Last Stranding catalyst that he tried to create, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for him. After all, Fragile makes it quite clear that death is not the end for most people, so why would someone as bitter and hateful as Higgs let death be the end for him when he has such a strong desire for the suffering of Sam?

What Awaits Tomorrow?

Tomorrow is Clearly Our Future

tomorrow teases death stranding 3

With Tomorrow saved, literally and figuratively, she manages to remember who she is. Tomorrow is Louise, she’s Lou, Sam’s biological daughter. With Sam and Lou reunited, and the years between them lost due to Lou being brought to the Beach as a baby to keep her safe, only time will tell what future awaits Tomorrow. Tomorrow loves porters and takes the job as her father’s successor as a porter herself. Equipped with unique DOOMs and timefall powers, Tomorrow holds quite the importance as the daughter of a Repatriate, an extinction entity who is able to advance and reverse the effects of time, while also controlling the tar. It’s clear that she’s preparing to head through a Plate Gate to further the human connection through the Chiral Network, so the question remains… where is Tomorrow going, and what awaits her future in a potential Death Stranding 3?

Where Will Sam’s Journey Take Him Next?

Sam Earned His Retirement, But Does He Want It?

sam puts a gun to his head

Sam has endured so much throughout his life. With each step Sam takes to connect America and Australia, he further loses the connection to his humanity through loss. Sam has lost his wife, his child, and while he might be reunited with Lou, he’s lost Fragile. How much more loss can Sam take, and what’s next for his character? He seemed uninterested in expanding past Mexico, but losing Lou made him travel to Australia. So, what can the world expect from the One Who Delivers, and will Sam’s journey continue through the expansion of the Chiral Network, or will he retire for a peaceful life of solitude?

Could There Ever Be A Last Stranding?

The End of the World Might Not Come Tomorrow

lou as an extinction entity

Both Death Stranding games feature the Last Stranding as the finale, a devastating extinction event that would see humanity wiped off the Earth, leaving behind a barren world with the existence of life itself gone for good. With Higgs apparently gone, Amelia secluded on her beach forever, and Tomorrow as an extinction entity unable to cross to the Beach, would that mean that there’s no more risk of a Last Stranding? It’s hard to see the events that transpire as a happy ending since BTs still exist, meaning voidouts can still happen, but at least a Last Stranding is off the cards… right?
