Summary

  • Some One Piece Devil Fruits can be unhealthy, like Glare Glare, causing mental strain.
  • Puff Puff Fruit may lead to injuries if used excessively, with physical drawbacks.
  • Dark Dark Fruit is risky due to mental effects and inability to avoid physical damage.

Every pirate and marine in the world of One Piece wants to get their hands on a Devil Fruit if they haven’t already, considering that these mysterious foods will grant the user a brand-new ability to utilize in battle. The truth is, though, to help ensure these abilities don’t become too overpowered, many of them come with some pretty severe drawbacks, including a select few which have been proven to be quite unhealthy for the host in a few different ways.

While this can obviously be the case from a physical perspective, such as how a person will slowly break down their body or harm themselves due to the power of their fruit, it can also be unhealthy for their mental state. Needless to say, many Devil Fruits certainly don’t come without a fair set of risks that need to be known about beforehand, but the fruits below are the ones that have been shown so far in the One Piece story that are considered to be the most unhealthy for their users’ physical and mental well-being.

Glare Glare Fruit

Being Able To Read Other People’s Minds Can Have Pretty Bad Consequences

  • User: Viola
  • Type: Paramecia

The Glare Glare fruit allows Viola to essentially peer into anything that she desires, whether it be a person’s body, their memories, or even just what they’re thinking at that moment. Though it may seem absurdly powerful on the surface, and it definitely can be when used in the right hands, having access to someone’s deepest thoughts and feelings can sometimes be a little too much for Viola to handle; especially if the target in question is someone evil and malicious who can only think of destroying the world around them.

While the fruit, therefore, won’t have any negative effect on Viola’s vision, it’s really the mental effects that make it a rather risky ability to use consistently, especially considering Viola will often have no idea who her latest target is, and what their deepest desires are. With that being said, she was able to make pretty good use of her fruit to assist Doflamingo in ruling over Dressrosa, but she’s definitely still been scarred more than a few times due to what she has seen throughout her life.

Puff Puff Fruit

Daifuku Could Pick Up Some Uncomfortable Injuries If He Relies On His Fruit Too Much

  • User: Daifuku
  • Type: Paramecia

On the surface, the ability to summon a spear-wielding genie who can fight on behalf of the user can seem like a pretty reliable fruit to have, but what makes it somewhat dangerous is the way that Daifuku activates it. To bring the genie out into the wild, Daifuku must rub a part of his body extremely quickly to awaken the slumbering entity, and in the anime, it was shown that he was forced to do this for multiple seconds before the fruit kicked into action.

Relying on this too heavily could eventually lead to a nasty rash or even some injuries if Daifuku is too forceful. He might not feel the effects the first time around, but if he is forced to constantly summon the genie in the middle of an intense battle, Daifuku could inevitably pick up some pretty unpleasant injuries if he’s not careful.

Poison Poison Fruit

When Magellan’s Not Watching Over Impel Down, He’s Forced To Spend A Few Hours On The Toilet

  • User: Magellan
  • Type: Paramecia

Most people in One Piece who possess a Devil Fruit will have full control and immunity to the element that they are connected to, but Magellan, the headguard of Impel Down, is a little different. While the vicious antagonist is able to inflict his targets with a deadly poison which can kill them in mere seconds, this doesn’t mean that Magellan himself is completely immune to its effect either.

Any time Magellan tries to chow down on food that contains any kind of poison, which seems to be his favorite ingredient, he will immediately be rushed to the nearest toilet where he can relieve himself for the next few minutes, or even hours. Considering the Poison Poison fruit is one of the most dangerous abilities in the entire series, it makes sense that it would have some sort of nasty side effect for the user to deal with, but considering Magellan always needs to be watching over the hordes of prisoners who occupy Impel Down, it’s a pretty big drawback to have, and a very unhealthy habit of his that he needs to work on.

Memo Memo Fruit

A Unique But Powerful Ability That Can Turn The User Obsessive

  • User: Pudding
  • Type: Paramecia

Pudding’s Devil Fruit is one of the most creative in all of One Piece, as it allows her to extract a person’s memories like a reel of film where she can then remove certain parts that she sees as undesirable. This is one of those abilities that inevitably begins to warp the mind of its host once they start using it too much, as it essentially allows Pudding to play god by giving her an immense amount of power and control over the people that she meets on Whole Cake Island.

While Pudding was already a little on the crazy side, even if a completely normal and innocent person were to acquire this fruit, it would only be a matter of time before they would become drunk on their own power, resulting in it becoming pretty unhealthy for their mental states. Ironically, it’s a fruit that many people would probably want to have for themselves, without actually realizing the repercussions that would come with it.

3

Stick Stick Fruit

Trebol Is Constantly Covered In Mucus, Making Him A Real Sight For Sore Eyes

  • User: Trebol
  • Type: Paramecia

Trebol is one of Doflamingo’s most loyal henchmen, who was willing to do anything to protect his master, even if it meant flinging a gross barrage of mucus to slow his targets down to a crawl. At first, many fans assumed that Trebol’s Stick Stick fruit was a Logia type that allowed him to manipulate mucus at will, but it’s actually a Paramecia. This means that Trebol is unable to turn into mucus itself, and is only able to throw it out like a projectile, but considering how much of it is covering his body, it seems more likely that it’s doing more harm to him than his opponents.

Having mucus permanently covering his nostrils, and even his mouth in certain scenes, would make it pretty difficult to breathe, especially since it never seems to stop running. Trebol himself may seem less than bothered about maintaining his appearance, but it’s clear that his Devil Fruit wouldn’t exactly be well suited for someone who wants to stay fit and healthy.

2

Dark Dark Fruit

Incredible Power Comes At A Heavy Price

  • User: Blackbeard
  • Type: Logia

There are two main reasons why the Dark Dark fruit, currently owned by Blackbeard, could be considered so unhealthy for the person using it. On the one hand, wielding the power of darkness itself would inevitably begin to take over the mind of the user, considering that having such an evil and overly destructive power would encourage the person wielding it to obliterate everything in their way, even if they didn’t have that intention in mind to begin with; effecting their mental state as a result.

However, as Blackbeard himself explains, the person using it is also unable to avoid attacks the same way that most Logia users can. As a result, he will actually take more damage from physical attacks since the darkness will draw the damage inward. When put together, these two side effects make the Dark Dark fruit extremely risky to use, and also very dangerous for anyone who decides to consume it for themselves.

1

Huge Huge Fruit

Sanjuan Wolf’s Fruit Encourages Him To Be Lazy And Unbothered

  • User: Sanjuan Wolf
  • Type: Paramecia

Thanks to his Devil Fruit, which allows him to drastically expand his size in just a few seconds, Sanjuan Wolf is officially one of the biggest characters in the entire series, which is certainly saying something given the stature of the giants that have been seen in the story. The truth is, though, while Blackbeard’s loyal servant is able to deal plenty of chaos and carnage when he transforms, it actually makes him so big that Wolf himself isn’t exactly encouraged to be all that proactive or energized.

Instead, it actually benefits him to be as big as possible, since slimming down would make the fruit much less effective in terms of its power. Additionally, because Wolf doesn’t actually need to take that many steps to cross an island when he turns into a giant, he can usually be found lazing around and sitting on his backside while the other pirates do all the work. With that being said, it doesn’t seem like Sanjuan Wolf is eager to sign up for any exercise regimens any time soon.
