Description

Valve’s new VR headset, currently codenamed “Deckard,” may have had its official market name revealed: Steam Frame. Though it hasn’t been formally announced, a new trademark by Valve for the Steam Frame suggests it could be the name used by this upcoming virtual reality peripheral.

A new VR headset is being developed by Valve. Known as “Deckard” at the moment, this piece of hardware is a standalone, high-quality wireless VR headset that will feature compatibility with both Steam and the Steam Deck, and will be a successor to the Valve Index VR headset released in 2019. Despite the hype, little information has been officially shared by Valve, with most details available from leaks, insiders, and other sources.

Valve’s ‘Deckard’ VR Headset Could Be Called ‘Steam Frame’

Now, yet another piece of potential information has come from an unexpected source. Valve recently filed a new trademark for “Steam Frame,” which is “intended to cover the categories of computer hardware; computer networking hardware; computer peripherals; computer hardware and computer software for the reproduction, processing, and streaming of audio, video, data, text, and multimedia content.” While there has not been an official announcement confirming the fact, the mark’s wide coverage of both hardware and software sounds like it would cover everything the “Deckard” VR headset would need to do as a multimedia streaming device with full integration with the popular video game service platform.

Were that not convincing enough, recent strings discovered in the recent SteamVR update made dozens of references to the words “Frame” and “Steam Frame,” further suggesting the connection between the new Valve trademark and the VR headset. Valve insider Brad Lynch shared evidence of these changes and shared them on Twitter.

Lynch claims Valve’s plans go even deeper than that. While datamining, he discovered a mass rebranding of VR “overlays” to “frames,” with a major focus on what he referred to as “spatial gaming.” While Valve has yet to comment on this new trademark or information, it seems likely that the official name of the “Deckard” is going to be Steam Frame. That said, others suspect Steam Frame may be the name of Valve’s new home console, so until gamers get word directly from the company, these details are still in the realm of speculation.

Regardless, evidence suggests Valve plans to release the “Deckard” before the end of 2025, with many suspecting November as the most likely release window. This would put it right before the holiday season, making it an ideal time to launch the new device – especially if the rumored $1200 price for the Valve peripheral is accurate. Considering this new trademark filing, an announcement for Steam’s upcoming VR headset could be imminent. Fans interested in finding out the official name, price point, and details should be sure to keep an eye on Valve in the meantime.
