Description

This article only includes mortals who are confirmed to be as strong or almost as strong as Goku. No Gods of Destruction or Angels count here.

Throughout the Dragon Ball franchise, Goku has often stood out as the main character who serves as the benchmark of strength for others. Not only has he been the central focus of the series since its very inception, but he has also been the strongest warrior in the universe who has been chosen to defeat the ultimate villain when no one else could hope to step up to that level. Out of all the heroes in the series, none stands as more iconic.

However, with the Dragon Ball Super part of the franchise, it’s clear that things are a little different from before. At the start of the series, Vegeta was made a central part of it alongside his longtime rival, and now, there seems to be multiple main characters due to the franchise making all the main heroes exist at a relative level of strength. So, in this article, let’s go over the 5 characters who are just as strong, if not stronger, than Goku.

Vegeta Is Goku’s Longtime Rival Who Has Now Equaled Him With His Divine Form

Strongest Form: Ultra Ego

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 5, “Gohan’s Rage”

Story Arc

Saiyan Saga

  • Ultra Ego is the perfect technique for Vegeta.

Ever since Goku unlocked the Ultra Instinct form during the Tournament of Power, everyone was left amazed at the pinnacle of Martial Arts. Naturally, Vegeta tried to imitate this transformation but found it nearly impossible to do so as it went against everything that he had learned over the years as a Saiyan warrior, perfectly opening the doors for what fans consider the best unique transformation of them all that finally brought him to his rival’s level.

A God of Destruction taught me that power derived solely from instinct is unbounded!

Vegeta instead unlocked Ultra Ego, a form that makes use of the Destroyer Gods’ inherent technique and allows him to use the fabled Energy of Destruction. It works as the complete opposite of Ultra Instinct, in that it prioritizes taking damage in order to make Vegeta’s next attack even stronger, and though he has a long way to go before mastering it, Vegeta still performed better with it against Granolah than Goku did with his Mastered Ultra Instinct.

Gohan’s New Form Makes Full Use Of The Hybrid Saiyan’s Insane Potential

Strongest Form: Gohan Beast

Beast Gohan 2

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 1, “The New Threat”

Story Arc

Saiyan Saga

  • Gohan’s ultimate form is broken.

Ever since the Cell Saga ended in Dragon Ball Z, many fans have argued that Gohan has largely been useless for much of the story, despite being a fan-favorite character due to his antics against Perfect Cell. To make up for that, Dragon Ball Super gave the hybrid Saiyan a brand-new transformation unlike any other that also brought him to the upper echelons of mortal warriors across the multiverse.

My goal is an ultimate form that no one has seen before!

Admittedly, Gohan Beast was met with a lot of criticism, mainly because it made Gohan stronger through contrived means instead of through training and hard work. Still, though, Gohan was able to defeat Cell Max effortlessly with this form and even sparred very equally against Goku in his Mastered Ultra Instinct state, showing that he is one of the strongest warriors once again.

Broly’s Unmatched Strength Brings Him To The Same Level As The Others

Strongest Form: Full Power Super Saiyan

Broly powers up in his Super Saiyan Berserk state against Gogeta in Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018)

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Story Arc

Broly Arc

  • Broly is the most naturally talented Saiyan of them all.

Throughout the entirety of the Dragon Ball story, Broly may just be the most naturally talented warrior of them all. In the same movie bearing his name, he was finally made canon and shown to be so powerful that he could take on both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue states while still in his base form. Once he unlocked Super Saiyan, the heroes simply had no chance.

Look at this… your battle power is astonishing!

Out of all the characters we have seen over the course of the franchise, Broly’s destructive might may just be the greatest. Eventually, he went on to further unlock his Full Powered Super Saiyan state, or Legendary Super Saiyan, which was so strong that it could only be put down by Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta. For the longest time, he couldn’t control his power, until recently, in Chapter 103, when he finally awoke this form without losing his mind.

Piccolo’s Latest Form Finally Makes Him One Of The Main Characters

Strongest Form: Orange Piccolo

Piccolo in his orange form in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

First Appearance

Dragon Ball, Episode 123, “Lost and Found”

Story Arc

Piccolo Jr. Saga

  • Piccolo is once again one of the series’ main characters.

The Super Hero film was loved for many reasons, and one of the chief among them was the importance it placed on the fan-favorite character, Piccolo. Though he has always been a mainstay of the cast since the very first episode of Dragon Ball Z, it wasn’t until the Super Hero film that he was finally brought onto a similar playing field as the remaining main heroes of the series.

I’m a smidge different than before.

Unlike the others, Orange Piccolo likely isn’t as offensively capable or strong as Goku, but he more than makes up for it with his brilliant tactical mind and brand-new powers. Orange Piccolo sees all of the Namekian’s inherent potential unlocked, finally bringing him to the level of the Saiyans as one of the most important and powerful fighters in the entire Dragon Ball franchise.

Frieza Is Now Far Stronger Than Goku And Everyone Else In The Multiverse

Strongest Form: Black Frieza

picture: black frieza in db super.

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 44, “Brood of Evil”

Story Arc

Namek Saga

  • Frieza may be the only one who is strong enough to compete with Beerus.

Dragon Ball Super finally saw the franchise’s best villain return to the forefront of things. Though he was initially a villain in the Resurrection F arc, Frieza eventually became an invaluable ally in the Tournament of Power who was essential in defeating Jiren to save Universe 7. After that, the Galactic Tyrant was finally brought back to life and allowed to roam Universe 7 freely and continue his evil ways.

Meet Black Frieza! Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know.

At the end of the Granolah arc, Frieza made a surprise return to the series after a notable absence, but revealed that, after the Tournament of Power, he hadn’t just been sitting around. Upon finding a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on a random planet, Frieza got in 10 years’ worth of training, allowing him to fully realize his unmatched potential and unlock his Black Frieza form, which was strong enough to knock out Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta at once. Throughout the entire multiverse, there is no mortal even nearly as strong as Black Frieza.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
